These lilacs may be the fruit of someone's dream. Someone, a long time ago, planted the seeds that became these fragrant bushes. Did that person know how absolutely beautiful that gift would be?
Most of us have dreams of what we could do, who we could be, how we could make a difference. These dreams are often clear in childhood and adolescence. The daily grind of adult life can cloud these from our vision. The realities of life can obscure the outrageous nature of a dream.
And yet, these dreams are profoundly important.
Our deep dreams are as unique as our fingerprints. These dreams are often connected to the creative wellspring within. They consist of
- our passions and interests
- our gifts and talents
- our values
Our dreams are precious things, like seedlings pushing up through the ground. They need the right amount of care and attention to grow. Just the right amount of sunlight. Just the right amount of water. Just the right amount of warmth.
And then we sit back and see what grows.
We are social creatures, we humans, and so our dreams are lived out in the context of other people.
Long ago I was given this advice: Tell not your dreams. Do them.
- Sometimes others feel the need to direct our dreams, to re-direct our dreams, to caution us about our dreams, to take over our dreams. Sometimes these are less wise and not-so-trusted people who trample the new sprout.
- In contrast there are our wise and trusted people who know how important it is to avoid treading on our wee seedlings. These wise souls watch with us, celebrate the growth, and encourage us along.
So on this beautiful spring day I wish you dreams that are sprouting, or soon to be planted.
